Day trips out of Garmisch Partenkirchen

by Elaine

Garmisch Partenkirchen

Garmisch Partenkirchen

I am travelling to Garmisch from 3 - 10 Dec with my 2 kids (8 and 5 years old), parents and sister. We are really looking forward to enjoy the winter wonderland of Christmas for our holiday. We also plan to go on a few day trips out of Garmisch.

I have read that its more convenient to take the RVO buses (rather than the trains) to Fussen, Oberammergau, Mittenwald. Is that true? If so, is there a website in English where I can do my bookings? Or is it possible/cheaper for all of us if I buy the Bayern pass and use it on the buses?

We are also interested to go on the Außerfernbahn route using the Bayern pass. Can you suggest a few villages in Austria covered by the Bayern pass) along the Außerfernbahn where I can stop for Christmas markets?

Thanks so much

Day trips around Garmisch

Hi Elaine,

I am pretty sure you are going to enjoy the winter wonderland, especially in the alpine region, the scenery is beautiful. But take warm clothes, the winter wonderland is cold, even when the sun shines.

Well, I checked connections between Garmisch, Mittenwald, Fussen and Oberammergau. There are indeed no direct trains, only bus/train combos. Some of the connections involve changing of trains and buses a few times.

Between Garmisch and Fussen is only one direct bus per day that takes 2 hours. Mittenwald takes 30 minutes and Oberammergau 40 minutes.

The best advice is to ask at the tourist information centre in Garmisch Partenkirchen. I am sure they can help you with timetables and more tips to get around.

Sorry, I can't recommend any village in Austria along the Außerfernbahn train route. I am sure the tourist info can help as well.

When you get the chance have a look at the Christmas market in Frankfurt, it is really beautiful. Although, I admit that there is no snow guarantee in December.

But I am sure you will find many enchanting Christmas markets in southern Bavaria. Nearly each town has one, although they are often held only on the weekends.

Again, the tourist info in Garmisch can give you tips.

Have a good time.
