Hanau - Where is the beer?

Former Nicolay brewery premises

Stationed in Hanau in 1955-1957. Still in contact with old army buddies.
Our question is ..Can we still buy Nicolay beer to serve at next reunion??

Hi,

Wow, after such a long time you still remember Nicolay beer from Hanau. That's amazing.

I am afraid to say, the Nicolay brewery doesn't exist anymore. The brewery closed in 1974. A couple of years later the buildings were pulled down and a housing area was built.

I took the photo today (28.06.2010) to show you what the Nicolay brewery area looks like today.

Actually, none of the breweries in Hanau exist anymore. But you still find nice pubs to enjoy a beer with your buddies.

Have you been to Hanau since the 1950s? There are probably a few areas you wouldn't recognise these days.

Hi Greg,

I am not aware that anyone in Hanau sells old stuff from the Nicolay brewery.

There is occasionally an offer at ebay. There are a few websites like this one which show these things, but they are obviously collectors and don't sell.

I have an old Hanau stein...I don't know anything about it. Does anyone on here know about the steins that came from this region? I read where if it has a number under the handle that it is truly old. It does have a number under the handle. I just think it is real interesting to see when this was made. Maybe it was during the time when the breweries were in Hanau. If anyone has any info I would sure like to know...it says on the mug: Der erste Zug nie lang genug! Hanau a/main Thanks! Donna

Beer steins

Hi Donna,

There have always been two different categories of beer steins.

1) Plain steins are produced to be used in pubs that serve the beer of a certain brewery. These steins can have a logo of the brewery, or not.

2) Decorative steins made for collectors and for souvenirs.

It seems that your stein is in the second category. It could be produced anywhere in Germany, even abroad, to be sold as a souvenir from Hanau.

"Der erste Zug nie lang genug!" appears on many beer steins, so this won't give us a clue.

Is the number on the stein a date?

Could you take a photo of the stein and submit it here http://www.germany-insider-facts.com/hanau-germany.html#INV

Perhaps this would help to get more info about your stein.

Thanks, Rita for your help...I will get a picture and post. The number looks like 415. I do not know what that means, and it is directly under the top part of the handle of the mug. Thanks again...Donna
