German lifestyle acceptance.

Christopher Street Day in Berlin, 1999

Hello, again.

About the 'night-life' etc. Are homosexual relationships accepted by most or frowned upon by most of Germany?

If I go to Germany, can I kiss my boyfriend in the street?

If it is frowned at, is it because it is illegal?
Also, how do I say, "Are you 21?" in German?

Widely accepted

Hi Brendan,

Homosexuality is legal in Germany, and also widely accepted. Of course, there are always people who frown upon. But in general, Germans have become fairly liberal in the past 20 or 30 years.

Gay and lesbian communities have their street parades every year in Berlin, Frankfurt and Cologne, for example.
So yes, you can kiss your boyfriend in the street.

Since 2001 homosexual and lesbian couples can register a life partnership which includes certain rights, but not the tax benefits married couples enjoy. Same-sex marriage is not allowed in Germany yet.

As you asked for night-life etc, there are night-clubs, bars and brothels, especially in the large cities. Prostitution is legal in Germany, however, not widely accepted in the general public. There is still a social stigmatization of prostitutes.

Are you 21 is Bist (schon) du 21? in German.

Rita
