Bus travel in Bavaria

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber Dinkelsbühl

Hi Rita,
I plan on taking the Romantic Road Bus to get from Rothenburg to Fussen as a one-way transportation later this month. I also plan on traveling between Fussen-Oberammergau-Garmisch by RVO buses.

My questions are:
1. Is the scenery by bus between Rothenburg and Fussen, worth the longer travel time, as compared to the train route?
2. Are all these buses big enough so I can take my luggage on?
3. Do I need to buy tickets/reservation ahead of time with both companies?

Thank you!
Maggie

Romantic Road Bus
by: Rita

Hello Tan,

Unfortunately, the Romantic Road bus operates only from April to October.
In December your only option (as I am aware of) is to travel by train.
You can search the DB website for connections and purchase your ticket online.

The best connection seems to be at 11:06 am when you only have 2 train changes on the route.

Extra Day in Füssen
by: Rita

Hi Maggie,

Here are a few suggestions for your extra day.

Of course it depends what you personally like, culture, museums, nature, scenery, and of course on the weather. It is no fun driving around when it is raining and the mountains hide behind clouds and fog.

As the extra day is obviously a Sunday shopping is not an option, most shops are closed on Sundays.
I would suggest to spend the extra day in Fussen. And no, I wouldn't do a day to Munich as you are going to Munich anyway.

Here is what you can do:

Spend the day on and around Forggensee. There is a scheduled boat service for the lake. You can tour the entire 12 km of the lake with a boat with the option to get off and take the next boat.

Take the bus to see the famous pilgrimage Wies church near Steingaden.

Spend a few hours in Füssen's museums.

I hope this helps to make a decision.

Fussen vs Oberammagau?
by: Maggie

Thank you Rita, for your valuable input!

I have about a week before going to Munich at end of September to meet some friends. So this is my tentative itinerary before then:

Fri: Arrive in Fussen via Romantic Road Bus by evening
Sat: Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau.. plus other sights in town (stay in Fussen overnight)
Sun: Day trip to Munich ?

Mon: Take RVO bus to Oberammagau in morning, then see Lindhof castel in afternoon (stay in Oberammagau overnight)
Tue: Day trip from Oberammagau to Garmisch and Zugspitze (by bus)
Wed: Day trip to Chiemsee
Thurs: Go to Munich for couple of days

My question is:
I have an extra night to stay in town (ie, that Sunday day trip to Munich), do you recommend Fussen or Oberammagau? I'm basically trying to decide when to leave Fussen for Oberammagau (Sunday vs Monday). Not sure which town has more things to do to spend the extra night.

Thank you again!

Bus travel in Bavaria
by: Rita

Hi Maggie,

You are going to travel along the most beautiful places in Germany. Yes, it is definitely worth to take the bus along the romantic road between Rothenburg and Fussen.
The bus stops at some towns for about 15 to 30 minutes, so get the chance to get off and have a quick look.

The train takes about 4 to 5 hours, but there is no direct train, so you would need to change trains at least 2 or 3 times.

Do you plan to stop along the way between Rothenburg and Füssen? I would really recommend at least a stop in Dinkelsbühl. It is such a lovely town, sort of the little sister of Rothenburg, but less crowded.

I am not sure if you need to book ahead the Europabus along the romantic road. On their webseite they say it is a kind of hop-on, hop-off bus, the ticket is valid for six months. So you can do stops along the way.

Some stops are only by pre-arrangement, but otherwise, I understand it is a scheduled route from April to October.

The romantic road coach has certainly room for your luggage. As for the RVO Bayern buses, these are local transport buses and each town / region has different bus models, so it is hard to judge that.
Of course, there won't be a problem with a travel bag or medium sized suitcase. I think the luggage one person can handle should fit on the bus.

The RVO boasts on their website that they connect travellers from the ICE train stations to the rural towns. And I didn't read anything about luggage restrictions.

As these RVO bus connections are no special buses for travellers, just the local public transport, I doubt that you can book ahead at all.

If possible, avoid the rush hours when commuters might crowd the buses.

BTW, I have published today a page about Fussen.

Once again I travelled in some regions in Bavaria and along the romantic road this year. So there is more to come on the Germany facts website soon.
